Our Purpose

Before, during, and after an emergency, coordinated and timely communication to the public is critical. Effective communication can save lives and property and can promote credibility and public trust.

The Joint Information System (JIS) is a structure that supports a network of dedicated crisis communications professionals working together in coordination to provide timely, accurate, and consistent messaging to the public during an emergency. The JIS supports Public Information and External Affairs roles within the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS).

The JIS may be activated by any member of the JIS coordination group to ensure consistent and accurate messaging across multiple agencies/jurisdictions and/or disciplines during an incident. It is also activated during incidents where an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is activated.
